Accredited Academic Program
At Hinckley Preparatory Academy, our mission is to develop the next generation of student athletes. Our academic and athletic programs teach students how to compete and excel in competitive environments. As early as Kindergarten, our students learn the fundamentals of healthy competition including mindset, motivation, teamwork, and toughness. As students grow and develop through the program, they can customize their mental and physical training path through special tutoring and team sports. We teach academics like we coach sports—with college in mind! Our commitment to students is a focused learning atmosphere that centers on academics, sports & life skills:
Our students receive daily instruction in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies & Sports. Students additionally participate in Art, Music, Technology, and Social-Emotional Learning. Our teachers follow the BLITZ Model which emphasizes mastery of each Ohio Learning Standard. In each subject area, teachers assess each student using scrimmages (every two weeks) and review or accelerate learning material accordingly. Throughout the school year, students, teachers, administrators, and parents track academic performance based on regular assessments, scrimmages, and academic competitions.
In Grades K-3, students are introduced to all sports and learn the basics of competition. In addition to fitness, intramural practice & game theory, students play card and board games to learn important aspects of sportsmanship, collaboration, and leadership. By Grade 4, students can participate in competitive intramural and league sports and later have the opportunity to commit to seasonal or year-round team sports.
Life Skills & Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)
Our well-rounded program helps students learn the vital life skills they need to become confident, contributing members of society. We incorporate Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) into daily academic and athletic instruction. We also value family time. Our athletic programs, including team practices and games, are designed to have student-athletes home by dinner time each night.
At Hinckley Prep, we teach a standards-based curriculum that prepares students for college and career readiness. Our curriculum is built on the Ohio Learning Standards (OLS) for English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Visual Arts, and Physical Education. Students are instructed in seven subject areas:
English Language Arts
We help students develop vital communication skills, while inspiring a love of literature. Younger children learn phonics and grammar and prepare for reading through multi-sensory activities, while older students learn to comprehend and analyze both fiction and non-fiction. The program emphasizes classic works and writing as a process.
We balance fundamental skills with critical thinking and problem solving. Our active approach ensures that students understand the realities that underlie mathematical concepts. Games and animations bring concepts to life, while challenge problems, regular practice, and review ensure mastery. We build from the concrete to the abstract as students move from basic skills toward algebra.
Our science program uses hands-on experiments to support the systematic study of life, Earth, and the physical sciences. We nurture curiosity as students practice observation and analytical skills. Students learn how our understanding of the world is shaped by ongoing scientific and technological advances.
Physical Education & Sports
Organized physical education gets children exercising regularly. It teaches students important concepts of teamwork and sportsmanship, as well as promoting general health and well-being. During the sporting season, students will participate in team practices and during the off season they will continue their training with general conditioning and yoga.
Lessons in Art Appreciation to develop understanding in form, style, and structure. Art projects allow students to explore their individual creativity and expression.
Fundamental instruction in melody, harmony, rhythm, and form. Experiential learning includes singing, moving, listening & performing.
ACCEL Instructional Model (AIM)
Our school is built on a strong foundation of high expectations for academic achievement for all students. We implement the ACCEL Instructional Model (AIM) which focuses on four key components to achieve strong academic results:
Students participate in a variety of learning activities each day that individualize instruction for each subject area. Students receive whole class instruction, small group instruction, and individual instruction with teachers, technology and other curricular tools.
Certified & Licensed Teachers
Our teachers meet the requirements set forth by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA): Bachelor’s degree, grade-level teaching license/certificate & ability to demonstrate subject area expertise. Our teachers are supported by trainers and participate in continuous, research-based professional development. Our teachers are accountable for student learning and rewarded for high quality performance.
More Time on Task
Our students receive double the instruction in ELA and Math to provide a strong foundation for all learning. Beginning with full-day Kindergarten, our school also follows a longer school day and school year than many other schools.
Short Cycle Assessments
Student knowledge of academic standards is assessed formally and informally in short cycles by each teacher. Our teachers adjust class-level and individual instruction based on student performance data in these frequent intervals.
